Quick answer

Atlanta matchday planning at a glance.

Atlanta hosts 8 World Cup 2026 matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta — five group games, two knockouts, and a Semifinal on July 15, 2026. The stadium is air-conditioned with a retractable roof and sits inside the downtown walking grid (Centennial Olympic Park, Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola are all within ten minutes on foot). The canonical no-car route from ATL is MARTA Gold or Red Line north to Five Points, then Blue or Green Line west to Vine City station — about 25 minutes total, $2.50 fare.

Atlanta is the deep-knockout city in the middle of the tournament arc. The other Southeast US host is Miami, and the only other indoor, air-conditioned US venue in the southern schedule is in Houston. The Final lands three days after the Atlanta Semifinal at MetLife — see our New York / NJ guide for July 19.

Stadium

Atlanta Stadium / Mercedes-Benz Stadium

CupCities uses both the neutral venue name and the common stadium name so fans can match tournament references with maps, rideshare apps, hotel listings, and local travel notes.

Atlanta World Cup 2026 stadium guide

Mercedes-Benz Stadium sits at 1 AMB Drive NW in downtown Atlanta, adjacent to Centennial Olympic Park. FIFA tournament rules ban commercial sponsor names during the World Cup, so on broadcast graphics, ticketing pages, and on-site signage the venue is referred to as Atlanta Stadium — but Google Maps, rideshare apps, and every local still call it Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Capacity is approximately 71,000+, and the retractable roof with full HVAC makes this one of only two air-conditioned venues hosting matches in the 2026 tournament (BC Place in Vancouver is the other). For a noon-ET kickoff in a Georgia summer, that climate control is the difference between a manageable experience and a 95 °F endurance test.

Airport to stadium

From Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to the match.

~25 minutes door-to-stadium via MARTA from ATL; allow 90 minutes before kickoff for FIFA-standard security and concourse queues.

Estimated route type

MARTA Gold or Red Line northbound to Five Points, transfer to Blue or Green Line westbound to Vine City station (~5-min walk to gates)

Public transit / shuttle notes

From the MARTA station inside the ATL domestic terminal, ride Gold or Red Line northbound to Five Points (~15 min), then transfer to the Blue or Green Line westbound to Vine City (~5 min). Door-to-stadium ~25 minutes for $2.50. The transfer at Five Points is short and across-the-platform, but it is not a one-seat ride from the airport.

Rideshare / driving notes

On matchday, Uber and Lyft hit downtown gridlock with surge pricing in both directions; pre-purchased parking passes only at Mercedes-Benz lots; downtown surface lots surge aggressively. The honest recommendation: do not drive on matchday — MARTA is faster, cheaper, and avoids the post-match parking-lot grind.

Matchday buffer time

~25 minutes door-to-stadium via MARTA from ATL; allow 90 minutes before kickoff for FIFA-standard security and concourse queues.

Matchday warning
Driving downtown and exiting a stadium lot after the final whistle is the worst 75 minutes of the trip — take MARTA.

Where to stay

Choose by matchday priority.

Each area works for a different kind of trip: shortest stadium access, stronger city experience, fan zone flexibility, or budget and family planning.

Closest stadium access

Downtown / Centennial Park

Walk to the stadium, walk to the expected fan zone footprint, and walk to Centennial Olympic Park, Georgia Aquarium, and World of Coca-Cola. Priciest base; downtown Atlanta is quieter than Midtown at night. Best fit for zero-friction matchday transit.

Best city experience

Midtown

Stronger restaurant scene, more nightlife, the Beltline corridor, and a real neighborhood feel. MARTA Red or Gold south to Five Points, transfer to Blue or Green west to Vine City puts you at the stadium in ~15 minutes. Best fit for 5+ days in Atlanta.

Budget / airport option

Airport / Hapeville corridor

Cheapest of the three options and the closest base to ATL for an early or late flight. MARTA Red or Gold direct to the airport, then continue north and transfer for the stadium. Best fit for a one-and-done knockout trip.

Matchday tips

Arrive with a plan.

  • Atlanta summers are humid and hot — high-80s to mid-90s °F with afternoon thunderstorms; pack a light rain shell.
  • The retractable roof handles weather inside the stadium; whether it is open or closed is a FIFA / stadium-operations decision made close to kickoff. The interior is air-conditioned either way.
  • Arrive at the stadium at least 90 minutes before kickoff. The Semifinal in particular will queue unlike anything Mercedes-Benz has previously processed.
  • MARTA is the move on matchday — buy your round-trip Breeze ticket before you leave the hotel; do not drive.
  • No walk-up parking on FIFA matchdays. Pre-purchased passes only at the stadium lots; downtown surface lots surge aggressively.
  • Bag policy and gate-opening times for FIFA matchdays will be published the week of your match — read the official notice the day before.

FAQ

Common fan questions.

When does Atlanta host the Semifinal?

The Atlanta Semifinal is on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (FIFA: Atlanta Stadium). The Final follows on Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

How many matches does Atlanta host?

Eight matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium: five group-stage games (June 15, 18, 21, 24, and 27), a Round of 32 on July 1, a Round of 16 on July 7, and the Semifinal on July 15.

Why does FIFA call it "Atlanta Stadium" instead of Mercedes-Benz Stadium?

FIFA tournament rules ban commercial sponsor names on host venues during a World Cup. Broadcast graphics, ticketing pages, and on-site signage during the tournament use the neutral name Atlanta Stadium. Google Maps, rideshare apps, and locals still call it Mercedes-Benz Stadium — that is the name to type into any travel app.

How do I get from Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) to Mercedes-Benz Stadium without a car?

Take MARTA from the airport station (inside the domestic terminal, next to baggage claim). Ride the Gold or Red Line northbound to Five Points (~15 min), transfer to the Blue or Green Line westbound, and ride one stop to Vine City station (~5 min). From Vine City it is a 5-minute walk to the gates. Total ~25 minutes; fare $2.50 on a Breeze card. Just be aware of the one transfer at Five Points.

Will the roof be open or closed for World Cup matches?

That is a FIFA and stadium-operations decision made close to kickoff and influenced by weather. The interior is air-conditioned either way. Plan on a comfortable indoor experience; do not plan on knowing the roof configuration in advance.

Is CupCities an official World Cup website?

No. CupCities is an independent fan information website and is not affiliated with FIFA or any official tournament organizer.
